Beyond Aesthetics: The Responsibility Behind Earth Stories' Products

Beyond Aesthetics: The Responsibility Behind Earth Stories' Products

Responsible Sourcing: My Journey Toward Sustainable Production

At Earth Stories, my goal is to create products that are not only beautiful but also ethical and sustainable. Beyond the aesthetics, I want to ensure that every item we make is the result of responsible choices, from the materials we use to the way they’re produced.

For me, responsible sourcing means much more than choosing eco-friendly materials—it’s about being mindful of the people and processes involved in bringing these products to life. It’s a guiding principle in everything we do, from notebooks and postcards to prints.

The Heart of Earth Stories: Materials and the Environment

I am committed to choose materials and production methods that align with my values of sustainability.

One important aspect of this commitment is the paper we use. We choose FSC-certified paper, which comes from responsibly managed forests. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification ensures that the paper we use helps preserve biodiversity, supports local communities, and minimizes environmental harm. By using FSC-certified paper, we can feel confident that we’re contributing to responsible forest management and production practices.

We also work with suppliers who prioritize environmentally friendly practices, such as reducing waste and conserving energy. This helps us ensure that the paper we use is not only of high quality but also produced in a way that has as little impact on the planet as possible.

Social Responsibility: A Core Value

For us, social responsibility is just as important as environmental responsibility. Early on, we decided that we wanted our products to be accessible to as many people as possible, which means we work at an industrial scale. But with that comes the responsibility to choose partners who meet high ethical standards.

We partner with factories that undergo annual certifications such as BSCI (Business Social Compliance Initiative) or Sedex, which help ensure fair wages, safe working conditions, and respect for workers' rights. While no certification process is perfect, we stay actively engaged and review each production process to ensure we maintain the standards that reflect our values.

Balancing Local and Global Production
Currently, some of our products are produced locally in Israel, while others are manufactured in China. In Israel, factories adhere to strict laws regarding safety, workers' rights, and environmental regulations, providing an important level of oversight. However, when it comes to material sourcing, it remains the responsibility of the brand to ensure the use of certified sustainable materials, such as FSC-certified paper. For our products made in the Far East, we place significant emphasis on ensuring compliance with BSCI or equivalent certifications, in addition to FSC certification. This dual commitment ensures that we are upholding both ethical labor practices and environmental sustainability, regardless of where the production takes place.

A Shared Responsibility

Ultimately, responsible sourcing is not just my responsibility as a designer, but also yours as a consumer. When you choose products that are thoughtfully made—created with care, respect for people, and a commitment to the environment—you are contributing to a more sustainable and ethical way of producing goods.

At Earth Stories, our goal isn’t just to offer a product; it’s to share a mindset that values people, nature, and the sustainability of both.
